Job Description

SUMMARY: The Early Childhood Program Assistant will assist in the Kindergarten program. The Assistant Teacher primary responsibility is to help and support the Lead Teacher in his/her work with the children. Duties include: snack preparation, assisting with set-up and clean-up, festival preparation, and meeting with early childhood teachers once a week. The daily activities include an artistic activity, creative play, circle time, a wholesome snack, outside playtime and story. Puppetry is a strong component of our programs.

This is a four-day position, Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 3:30pm

RESPONSIBILITIES: The following responsibilities are typical of those performed by associates in this job title; however, associates may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each associate in this job title. 

• Preparing snack

• Providing afternoon care that includes lunch, rest, bodily care, supervision of outdoor play, etc. for the children as indicated by the lead teacher. 

• Assisting the Lead Teacher in maintaining an orderly and healthy classroom environment: Set-up and clean-up with other early childhood teachers to keep common areas clean and tidy; closets, bathrooms, vacuum hallways, outdoors and outbuildings and upkeep of plants. 

• Assisting with handwork/artistic projects 

• Assisting children while using the bathroom, helping them change when they have accidents and diapering if needed.

• Communicating regularly with lead teachers

• Participating in required faculty meetings: Meet once a month for early childhood meeting

• Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information 

• Assisting children while using the bathroom, helping them change if they have accidents and diapering, if needed. 

• Performing other duties as assigned by the lead teacher; including help with the set-up of Lantern Walk and Advent Spiral and participation in the May Faire puppet show. 

• Participating in a professional development process as indicated by the school

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

Knowledge:

 • Knowledge of child development and early childhood education from a Waldorf perspective

Skills/Characteristics: 

• Enthusiasm for working with children

• Experience working with children 

• Appropriate role model for the children and parents

• Responsible for exhibiting good communication, problem solving and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive attitude.

• Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment and enforce rules consistently 

• Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism when dealing with challenging situations 

• Proven ability to work with staff and families from diverse backgrounds 

• 21-years of age 

• Reliable transportation 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Pay is $19.19/hour
  • Paid personal/sick days; time allotment will be based on number of days worked per week. Personal day for each day work (ie. 3 days = 3 personal days)
  • 10% remission per day work (ie. 3 days = 30% tuition remission) 
  • Mentoring - a mentor will be assigned 
  • Complimentary childcare for the monthly early childhood faculty meetings

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must pass State of Maine Child Abuse Check and Maine Criminal Record Check and background clearance.

Working with youth may require exposure to bacterial contamination.
