This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Game Backend Engineer (Remote) in the United States.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to shape the core backend systems for innovative multiplayer VR games. You will be responsible for designing scalable, secure, and performant server infrastructure, as well as implementing social and gameplay systems that support immersive player experiences. Working in a fully remote, globally distributed team, you will collaborate closely with designers, artists, and other engineers to develop next-generation social and gameplay features. This position allows you to influence the architecture and performance of live game environments, while staying at the forefront of VR and online gaming technology. Ideal candidates are passionate about games, backend development, and building systems that support millions of interactions seamlessly.

Accountabilities:

• Architect, develop, and maintain scalable and secure backend systems and APIs for multiplayer VR games.
• Collaborate with game designers to implement gameplay mechanics, social features, and immersive experiences.
• Build and optimize systems for managing in-game friends, social interactions, in-game currency, and communication.
• Ensure backend systems handle high traffic loads while maintaining performance, reliability, and security.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and enhance server performance continuously.
• Research and apply emerging technologies, best practices, and industry trends in backend development and VR gaming.

Requirements

• Proven experience in backend engineering for online games or real-time multiplayer systems.
• Strong proficiency in designing scalable server architectures, APIs, and databases.
• Experience with social systems, in-game economy mechanics, and multiplayer networking.
• Solid understanding of performance optimization, concurrency, and security considerations in game backend systems.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, server orchestration, and monitoring tools.
• Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, cross-functional, and globally distributed team.
• Strong problem-solving skills, initiative, and passion for delivering high-quality gaming experiences.

Preferred:

• Experience with VR/AR platforms or social gaming environments.
• Knowledge of modular game design and physics-based gameplay systems.
• Familiarity with real-time communication protocols and multiplayer server frameworks.
